About Music Gives Back
Music Gives Back comes from a very modest background. In the Fall of 2011, I (Michael Crino) moved in to a new apartment in a frat house with someone I had never met. My roommate turned out to be Patt O'Brien and we hit it off right away. We both shared a strong bond for music which led to an inspiration for the entire project. Patt, my roommate and one of my best friends, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis - an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. I came up with the idea in my head to release a one off compilation, using the bands that Patt and I were always playing in our room, and to host a benefit concert at a now closed concert venue, Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ.
In July of 2012, everything came together. We had compiled 17 artists for a compilation we entitled "Open Your Heart" and a benefit concert with 5 bands was held on July 24, 2012 at Maxwells. It was right after that event, that Music Gives Back was born. What was once seen as a one time endeavor has since flourished into more concert events, charity auctions, and an annual Cystic Fibrosis walk.
In late 2012, Music Gives Back created Soft Speak Records to serve as an imprint label of the corporation. Soft Speak Records exclusively handles all vinyl and cassette releases. To date, Music Gives Back has donated to several organizations including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Toys for Tots, and Make a Wish. Music Gives Back is a registered 501©3 with the International Revenue Service.
